The North

Up

"The North" has a mystical feel to it.  The north is surrounded by Mountains, the Mekong River and the countries of Myranmar (Burma) and Laos.   There are only two large Cities, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.  There are still border clashes between the Thai Military and rebel groups of the two countries. It is not unusual to hear of drug traffickers intercepted coming across the mountains from Myranmar.  It seems they always "resist" and are almost always killed.

There are numerous ethnic hill tribes who still live in villages that are nearly inaccessible to the public and void of modern conveniences.  Many just recently getting electricity. The foods are unique to the north and so are many of the dialects. The are commonly seen bringing their wares and crops to local markets.  Trekking is the major industry of Chiang Mai.  Rental motorcycles and tour operations are everywhere.

This is the area I have chosen to live for it's diversity, laid back way of life and the friendly people.
